Lesotho Documentary - 12 Days Driving in Lesotho

Journal Entry: Sun Aug 16, 2009, 11:17 AM

Some Thumbs from my recent trip:

The Lesotho Gallery Link is here: [link]

Update: The first time I went to Lesotho was for three days. If you read my previous journal entry [link] then you'll see where I got the first round of photographs for this documentary that will make up the images for my Degree in Photography.

For the latest trip I drove around for an amazing 12 days! It was really magical and really reaffirmed my love for travelling and documentary/travel photography. I started out this trip in Pretoria, Gauteng, South Africa (yet again), and this time I didn't have any car problems (thank God!).

Ok... I Drove from Pretoria all the way to Molumong, Lesotho in one day (with my 1985 VW Jetta). I stayed there for 4 days and then drove all the way over a hell of a mountain to the Sani Top Chalets ([link]) and backpacker lodge. Here you will find the highest pub in Africa. I stayed here for another 3 days. On the first night it was -15 Celsius (dunno the Fahrenheit). The next day I climbed a pretty impressive mountain full of snow.

When I wanted to leave the Sani Top Backpackers I realised that I forgot to add antifreeze solution with my car's water cooling system and my engine was completely frozen. It took me two hours of pouring lukewarm water over the water pipes to defrost it.

Ok... I then drove to Maseru (Lesotho's capitol city). It's not a really pleasant place to go and I only stayed for one night). There were this group of troubled teens from this special school in the UK. Some of the girls had this huge screaming fight in the middle of the night and I thought someone's being attacked or something.

Oh yeah... Lesotho is well known around Southern Africa as a place where copious amount's of marijuana. About 30km - 40km north of Lesotho there were all these kids along the road selling a shit load of bags (shopping bags, not the dime bag kind) of weed for about R100 a bag ($15). Crazy!!

Ok the next day I drove to Southern Lesotho to a Area called Malealea. The Lodge here was AWESOME ([link]). I stayed here for another 5 days.

This trip really grounded me. I needed to get away and I did. The photography was just a bonus. A photographer needs do photography for the joy and satisfaction of o good shot and not a deadline!!

Anyway enjoy the Photographs!!
